Anti-reflective (anti-glare) coating reduces reflections, night-driving glare and eye strain. Learn how it works, its benefits, how it differs from blue-cut, and how to care for coated lenses.
Have you noticed reflections on your glasses in photos, or halos around lights at night? An anti-reflective (AR) coating, often called anti-glare, is one of the most useful upgrades you can add to prescription lenses. Here is how it works and whether it is worth it for you.
What Is an Anti-Reflective Coating?
Ordinary plastic lenses reflect part of the light that hits them. An AR coating is a set of microscopically thin layers applied to the lens surface that cancel out those reflections, so more light passes through to your eye.
Benefits
- Clearer vision: more light reaches your eyes, with less ghosting
- Less night-driving glare from headlights and streetlights
- Reduced eye strain under tube lights and on screens
- Better appearance: people see your eyes, not reflections, which helps in video calls and photos
- Thinner high-index lenses reflect more light, so AR coating is especially helpful there
Anti-Glare vs Blue-Cut vs Photochromic
| Lens feature | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Anti-reflective | Removes reflections and glare | Almost everyone, especially night drivers |
| Blue-cut | Filters part of blue-violet light, usually with AR coating | Long screen hours |
| Photochromic | Darkens in sunlight | Moving between indoors and outdoors |
| Polarised sunglasses | Cuts reflected glare from roads and water | Daytime driving and outdoors |
Many lenses combine several features, for example blue-cut with AR, or photochromic with AR.
Who Benefits Most?
- Drivers on the GT Road and Hazara Motorway at night
- Students and office workers under bright lighting
- People with astigmatism, who often notice more halos
- Anyone with strong prescriptions
How to Care for Coated Lenses
- Rinse dust off with water first; Haripur dust can scratch dry lenses
- Use a drop of mild soap or lens spray and a clean microfibre cloth
- Never wipe with your shirt, tissue or dupatta
- Do not leave glasses on a car dashboard in summer; heat can crack coatings
- Avoid harsh chemicals such as acetone or strong glass cleaners
- Store in a hard case
Frequently Asked Questions
Can anti-glare coating be added to my existing glasses?
Generally no. The coating is applied during manufacture, so it is chosen when ordering new lenses.
Does anti-glare make lenses scratch-proof?
Good AR lenses include a hard coat, but no lens is completely scratch-proof. Proper cleaning makes them last.
Do I need anti-glare on sunglasses?
A back-side AR coating on sunglasses reduces reflections from behind, which many people find more comfortable.
